Great piles of citrus, stalls filled with greens of every kind; leaves, brassicas, pointy floretted Romanescos, wild chicory. Artichoke petals strewn under buckets of bobbing hearts, crates of clementines, puntarelle. This is winter at San Giovanni di Dio Market, where Market to Table begins.
When spring arrives so do fava beans, peas and strawberries, and in summer the greens morph into pinks and reds and we stuff bags with cherries and fry zucchini flowers. Market to Table is first and foremost seasonal, very vegetable focussed, and always includes focaccia, a fresh pasta, a small meat or fish dish, a seasonal dolce and interesting local wines with lunch. It is a more a day cooking together than a lesson, but Rachel, Carla and Alice share tips and stories and culinary anecdotes along the way. The group is limited to 6 people so that everyone is able to participate in a very hands on way.
Two of the three (Rachel, Carla, Alice) will always lead the class, we are not always able to confirm which combo until the week of class. Garden to Table is the sister experience held at Carla’s teaching kitchen in Ostia Antica.
Start time is 9.30 am at Totem Garden Bar, Largo Ravizza , on the Circonvallazione Gianicolense – Tram 8 (currently bus) and Bus H. After a quick coffee we stroll up to Mercato San Giovanni di Dio. We normally finish about 15.30 at the studio, Via Giacomo Corradi 14a.
